What is the WhatsApp Business API?

By the Chatensy team · Updated · 2 min read

The WhatsApp Business API (now part of the WhatsApp Business Platform) is Meta's official way for medium and large businesses to message customers on WhatsApp from software instead of a phone. It lets a team share one number, send approved template messages to opted-in customers at scale, automate replies, and connect WhatsApp to a CRM, store or helpdesk.

Key takeaways

  • The API is for businesses that need scale, a team inbox, automation or integrations; the free WhatsApp Business app is for one person on one phone.
  • Meta hosts it as the Cloud API. You reach it directly or through a platform such as Chatensy that adds the inbox, campaigns and automation.
  • Business-initiated messages must use templates Meta has approved, and only to people who opted in.
  • Meta charges per delivered template message by category and country; replies to customers inside the 24-hour service window are free.

How is the API different from the WhatsApp Business app?

The Business app is a free phone app for small businesses: one number on a phone and a few linked devices, with manual broadcasts to saved contacts. The API has no app of its own; software connects to it, so any number of agents can work on one number and messages can be sent and received automatically.

In supported markets Meta also offers Coexistence, which lets a number keep using the Business app while it is connected to the API.

What is the Cloud API?

The Cloud API is the version of the WhatsApp Business API that Meta hosts. Meta has retired the older self-hosted On-Premises API, so the Cloud API is now the standard way in. Businesses either call it from their own code or use a platform that does so for them.

What do you need to get started?

  1. A Meta Business portfolio (formerly Business Manager) for your company.
  2. A phone number that can receive a verification SMS or call. It can be new to WhatsApp, or moved from the Business app.
  3. A display name that matches your brand and follows Meta's display-name rules.
  4. Business verification in Meta Business settings. It is needed to raise your messaging limits.
  5. A payment method in WhatsApp Manager for Meta's message charges.

With Chatensy you sign in with your Meta account, choose or register the number, and the platform sets up the connection to your own Meta app, so the number and templates stay yours.

What are templates and the 24-hour window?

When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens and you can reply freely with text, media and buttons. Outside that window, or to start a conversation, you must send a template: a pre-approved message in the marketing, utility or authentication category. Meta reviews templates, usually within minutes to a few hours.

How many messages can you send?

New numbers start with a limit on how many unique customers they can message in a rolling 24 hours. The limit rises automatically as you verify your business, send consistently and keep your quality rating high. Blocks and reports lower quality and can hold limits back, which is why opt-in and relevant content matter.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WhatsApp Business API free?

Access to the Cloud API is free, but Meta charges for delivered template messages by category and country, and most businesses pay a platform for the inbox, campaigns and automation. Replies inside the 24-hour customer service window are free.

Can I use the WhatsApp Business API without a developer?

Yes. Platforms such as Chatensy give you the inbox, template builder, campaigns and chatbots without code, and connect the API to your number for you. Developers can still use the REST API for custom work.

Can I keep my existing number?

Yes. A number on the WhatsApp Business app can be moved to the API, and in supported markets Coexistence lets it keep using the app as well. A number that has never been on WhatsApp can be registered directly.
